Feeling Blah? 8 Ways to Get Out of a Slump

β€’

Work. School. Family. Decision fatigue. Burnout. Like burnout to the max capacity. Don’t even ask me what I want for breakfast because the decision fatigue has me by my neck. I genuinely cannot make a decision to save my life right now. So naturally, my body went into lazy mode. From the couch to the bed. From the bed back to the couch. And repeat. I didn’t even want to go out to get food. That’s how deep I’ve been in this slump. Btw, shoutout to DoorDash because, girl… you really saved me from having to make that trip to the store. But the thing is, being in a slump doesn’t really feel good. At least, it doesn’t for me. I start feeling disgusted with myself. My surroundings become a reflection of how I’m feeling on the inside, and the more I look around, the more frustrated I become with myself. Eventually, I realized, “Okay, girl, something has to change. I can’t just sit here waiting to magically feel better.

So, I’ve been trying to pull myself out of my slump, and here are 8 Ways to Get Out of a Slump.

1. Mom Was Right… It Is the Phone.

Okay, Mom. You were right. Doomscrolling is not helping my slump. At first, scrolling gives me that little hit of dopamine I’m looking for. But eventually, I become overstimulated. I’m sitting there thinking, β€œI literally want to throw my phone across the room,” but somehow my thumb is still scrolling. Make it make sense. So honestly? Put the phone down. Even if it’s just for 30 minutes. Give your brain a chance to breathe.

2. Take a Shower & Change Your Clothes

There is something about taking a shower and putting on clean clothes that makes me feel like I can actually get my life together. Now, I’m not saying you need to take a full everything shower. Sometimes I’m doing the absolute basics and calling it a day. But getting out of bed, taking a shower, putting on some clean clothes, and doing my hair a little can give me the boost I need to stop feeling like a human potato. Sometimes you just need a physical reset to start feeling mentally refreshed.

3. Clean One Small Area

Cleaning my space gives me a sense of control. And when I’m overwhelmed, that’s exactly what I need. I don’t have to think too hard about the task, and I don’t have to clean my entire house. Just one area. My go-to is usually my room because, let’s be honest, that’s normally where the chaos begins. I’ll put on some music, pick up the clothes, clear my vanity, and make my bed, and suddenly the room feels a little better. And when my surroundings feel better, I feel better.

4. Get Outside for 10–30 Minutes

There is just something about sunshine and fresh air that instantly makes me feel a little better. Getting some sunlight, going for a walk, and seeing other human beings helps pull me out of my little slump cave. Sometimes I’ll even use it as an excuse to go get myself a little sweet treat. And honestly? That’s a bonus. Sometimes the goal isn’t to have some deep life-changing experience. Sometimes you just need to get out of the house.

5. Play Music Instead of Scrolling

Good music will definitely help me get out of a slump. My go-to’s are usually gospel and lo-fi. I honestly don’t know what it is about those genres, but my brain just loves them. And then there are certain artists who immediately change my mood. Put on Masego or Stromae, and suddenly I’m in a whole different world. Next thing you know, I’m having a full-blown karaoke session in my bedroom.

6. Have a Little Reset Night

I will always talk about the importance of self-care. Self-care is your way of pouring back into yourself. And sometimes, putting yourself first is exactly what you need. For me, a reset night might look like:

✨ Taking a shower
✨ Doing my skincare
✨ Putting on comfy pajamas
✨ Making something good to eat
✨ Watching my favorite show
✨ Journaling
✨ Getting into bed with fresh sheets

It’s nothing extravagant. But there is something about intentionally taking care of yourself that reminds you: β€œOkay. Things are going to be okay.”

7. Try a New Hobby

I have always had a passion for art. For me, that looks like digital art, painting, writing… hence, this blog. Honestly, writing this right now is helping me stay out of my slump because I’m doing something I genuinely enjoy. And I love interacting with my girlfriends (aka you 🩷). Lately, I’ve also been getting into baking, and trying new recipes has been so much fun. Which actually makes me wonder…

8. Pray

Now, I know everyone doesn’t have the same beliefs, but for me, my relationship with God has played a huge role in helping me through difficult seasons. Even though this list isn’t in any particular order, I usually start with prayer when I’m trying to get myself out of a slump. Sometimes I don’t have some beautiful, perfectly worded prayer. Sometimes I’m literally just talking to God. I’ll vent. I’ll cry. I’ll tell Him what’s frustrating me. I’ll tell Him that I’m tired. And honestly, just having that conversation gives me a sense of peace. Sometimes I don’t need an immediate solution. I just need to remind myself that I don’t have to figure everything out by myself.

So, Are You in a Slump Too?

These are just some of the things that help me when I’m feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or completely checked out. And honestly, sometimes getting out of a slump isn’t about completely changing your life overnight.

So tell me, girl…
